Looking forward to Christmas… and the new year!

15 December 2020 12:15 PM

Despite everything that’s happened this year, Christmas is a festive time and the excitement that bubbles out of children is infectious. But though it’s a time of joy for the youngsters, it is tough for nursery staff. We’ve all had a roller coaster of a year and you need a break.

Of course, it’s tempting to use any time off to do a bit of paperwork and clear out some clutter. However, regardless of whether you’re open during some of the Christmas period, or shut, we’d say it’s worth accepting the more relaxed feel that inevitably slips in… and do what preparation you think you need to do; there is no right or wrong here.

Mind you, we also reckon you shouldn’t take it all upon your own shoulders; parents and carers can definitely do their bit in preparing too. The key is for everyone to have fun over Christmas, whilst ensuring that the transition back to nursery in the new year goes smoothly. And this is how they can help…

Encourage parents to maintain some routine

Everything is going to be topsy-turvy for a couple of weeks, but if things like naps and bed times can stay relatively consistent it will help. Not the easiest ask, we know. But children actually like routine, it makes them feel secure, and when they’re tired it’s this framework that helps everyone stay sane.

Suggest parents carry on with some nursery activities at home

It never harms to remind parents of what you have been up to with their children in recent weeks. And odds-on they’ll appreciate being given some ideas to keep the young ones occupied. Painting, play dough, colouring, building blocks etc. all of these are valuable pastimes that support education brilliantly. Reassure parents that these aren’t time wasters, they’re educators!

Recommend they keep in touch with a couple of friends over Zoom

Sadly, it’s going to be hard this year with parents not being able to meet up and arrange play dates very easily. But there’s no reason why a bit of contact can’t be maintained… even if it is over the internet. It will keep the younger children engaged with nursery and help maintain a sense of familiarity in preparation for going back in the new year.

Encourage chatter about nursery during the holidays

Get parents to ask their children what they might be doing if they were at nursery on a particular day. It’s a great way to retain their familiarity with that ‘other world’ they sometimes inhabit. Talk about the nursery staff by their names, mention friends, and ask what they’re looking forward to doing when they get back. It’s all great upbeat stuff that will keep the kids’ minds engaged and looking forward to their return.

Hint about some fun activities planned for January

Get the children excited about what they will be doing when they return. Let the parents know about some of the new year activities you’re planning. Give everyone something to look forward to and something to talk about.

And with those last thoughts, we feel all that is left now is for us to wish you a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS! Let’s all make 2021 something to look forward to.
